Conservation and Education Initiative

Our initial project is the first component of a larger mission to support goals of conservation, education and economic advancement of the rural Mozambican villages in the Niassa Province. This conservation step will, in turn, support a K-8 school to begin the formal education of the children in the area. It is estimated that 95% of the population in this province is illiterate. There are few schools in the area and those in existence are often understaffed with class sizes sometimes over 100 pupils per teacher. MCO’s primary goals are to build schools, find and hire competent educators and supply students with books and supplies.

The first phase of the MCO plan is to raise enough money to begin building a school to support K-12 primary education of children in an area within walking distance from the villages. MCO plans to hire the local indigenous peoples to clear the land, construct and maintain the building, and support the school as it grows. We envision that these schools will educate the children of and in addition to the normal curriculum will teach the students how to conserve their local environment. In this way, MCO hopes to stem the tide not only of illiteracy, but also of the dependence on poaching and environmental degradation to survive.

We believe that by empowering the local people with knowledge of conservation, protection of flora and fauna, and providing the training necessary to accomplish the task, MCO will create jobs for the immediate populations and for future generations.

The second phase of the MCO plan is to offer higher education scholarships to qualifying students to study at home or abroad so that they can return to the province and continue to improve it as professionals in education, engineering, farming, and tourism. In this way, the overall plan will continue in years to come.
