Conservation
and Education Initiative
Our initial project is the first component
of a larger mission to support goals
of conservation, education and economic
advancement of the rural Mozambican
villages in the Niassa Province. Our
primary initiative will employ government
certified game scouts. This conservation
step will, in turn, support a K-8 school
to begin the formal education of the
children in the area. It is estimated
that 95% of the population in this province
is illiterate. There are few schools
in the area and those in existence are
often understaffed with class sizes
sometimes over 100 pupils per teacher.
MCO’s primary goals are to build schools,
find and hire competent educators and
supply students with books and supplies.

Greening the
Nation
MCO has recently launched its “Greening
the Nation” program in Mozambique which
is aimed at introducing modern horticultural
practices to the rural areas. At the
core of this programme is the simple
greenhouse structure designed for local
conditions by the MCO horticultural
department and headed by specialist,
Peter Mackintosh. The greenhouse consists
of a wooden structure 8 metres high,
15 metres long, a plastic sheet roof
and enclosed in shade cloth. This gives
a total area under protection of 120
m2.
These simple greenhouses are a sustainable
method for local peoples to increase
their capacity for providing their own
food by producing fresh and organically
grown fruits and vegetables as well
as open up new avenues for local peoples
to earn a new source of income by selling
their products. Crops are grown hydroponically
in containers filled with locally sourced
coconut fibre which is an excellent
cheap growing medium.

Medical Supplies
Over $5000 of medical supplies have
been procured in the US by SDR’s partner,
MCO. They will arrive on the next quarterly
shipment to SDR in Mozambique. These
medical supplies will support the needs
of the people in the remote areas of
Northern Mozambique. The transshipments
of supplies are scheduled to launch
from Houston, Texas destined for Maputo
4 times a year.
Sinave Project
SDR field personnel recently reported
spotting over 20 illegal Nyala strung
up in a “bush meat” market. These Nyala
were taken from a remote riverine area
in Central Mozambique. The Sinave Project,
sponsored by SDR and MCO, is a program
dedicated to controlling the over harvesting
of rapidly declining plains game populations
in the area. The good news is that antelope
quickly repopulate when proper management
practices are enforced. |
