It is estimated that 95% of the population of the Niassa province is illiterate. There are few schools in the area and those in existence are often understaffed with class sizes sometimes over 100 pupils per teacher.

MCO’s primary goals are to build schools, hire competent educators and provide students with the books and supplies they need to improve their learning experience. Funds will be raised to build schools, first within Niassa, to support K-12 primary education of children in villages that we have a relationship. MCO will hire local people to clear the land and then build and maintain the school facility.

The school curriculum will address the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic in a way that ties in to the need for conservation and protection of the local environment. This will stem the tide not only of illiteracy, but also of the dependence on poaching to survive. By empowering local people with knowledge of conservation, protection of the animals and their habitats and providing the training necessary to accomplish the task, MCO will help create jobs for the immediate populations and for future generations. The second phase of the MCO plan will offer higher education scholarships to qualifying students. By giving them an opportunity to study at home or abroad, they can return to the province and continue to improve it as professionals in education, engineering, farming and tourism. Consequently, the area will progress and achieve self-sufficiency in years to come.
